Leg One: Done. Zurich Rocks.

// July 10th, 2007 // No Comments » // Emerging Tech

Well, the first phase of the three lab tour is done, and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Swiss were great hosts, and their country–well, I can understand why folks love it here. Granted, it was a little on the cool side (tonight it’s supposed to go down to 49F (that’s 9C for my European–and, infact, the rest of the world–friends). It’s Summer. What the heck is the deal with the frigid weather?

So, the lab tour was very interesting. Lots of cool projects going on in IBM’s Zurich Research Lab. We had a chance to meet everyone from the Lab Director to various researchers involved in interesting projects. The ZRL (Zurich Research Lab) is reknown in IBM for its work in security, privacy, process management, as well as systems management. And we weren’t disappointed–a number of new and promising technologies–technologies which may eventually find their way to [...] Continue Reading…

You have to love the Swiss. Just arrived in Zurich after a rather uneventful flight from JFK. By the way: I will never take another trans-Atlantic flight without being in at least Business Class. I was, to be perfectly honest, spoiled…and although the seats were much roomier than is common on domestic flights (even in first class), they still weren’t very comfortable to sleep in. Yes, they reclined. No, the didn’t recline all the way. But if I was only semi-comfy in Business Class, I couldn’t imagine the hell that would have been Coach Class.

With that said the young airline stewardess seemed to enjoy my goofiness…we (the passenger sitting next to me and I) gave her a good naturedly hard time…and she loved the fact that I asked her advice–and then took it (“What?! My opinion really matters?” “But, of course it does.”) All in all, she made the [...] Continue Reading…

One of the things I always find interesting about getting ready for a trip is the anticipation I feel right before leaving. I’m kinda like a kid in a candy store–I get jittery, I can’t stand still, and I’m pretty excited. The trip I’m getting ready to embark on will be a whirlwind tour of some of the IBM facilities in Europe and the MidEast. We’ll be visiting Zurich, Israel, and Egypt…all within a ten day period.

So today I realized something: I’ve not done a single thing to prepare. Part of that was to get a new server running at my house so I could send the “Big Dell’ to Kevin for Mydorp goodness, but the other part are all the little things you have to do to get ready: do I have toothpaste? How about the myriad of crapola I need for my hard contacts? Oh. And what [...] Continue Reading…

Spencesite: V6

// July 7th, 2007 // No Comments » // Life-n-Times

It’s alive, I tell you! It’s alive! K. Well. Not really. It’s my website. :P You knew that was coming…

Well, this is a major renovation to the Spencesite, er, website. You’ll notice that I’ve gone ahead and gotten rid of some things–some of which will reappear once I get around to making the edits. The main reason for this update was to get a real blog tool in place (since I’ll be going on my European/Mid-East trip in a day), and to also get a photo gallery up and running as well. So, sit back and enjoy. Hopefully you’ll be amused by my meanderings…til then, peace, and remember: Do Da Joke.
